Hello to all who stumble upon this video and to those who are returning to my channel. Firstly may I say this video is not a how-to video. I've been making telescopes and musical instruments for many years. Friends who asked me to make them a custom instrument have asked me to document their builds with photos so I thought I would document the process. So this telescope build came about by a go...

      @PeterSmithwoodsmith 4 месяца назад

      Thanks for the comment. These scopes work wonderfully. You may think they are bulky, but it stays collimated and perform perfectly. I have made many scopes in the last 20 years. Sometimes trying to make them as lite weight as possible but this makes the scope weak and they dont stay collimated. So I have settled on a design that is rock solid. They pack down small and fill in the back of a small car. Perhaps a commercial scope is more suited to your needs.

      @pangrac1 4 месяца назад

      @@PeterSmithwoodsmith Nope, commercial scopes are subpar, I will have to build my own. I will use more carbon and metal on bulky parts. It will be stiff but light.

    • @PeterSmithwoodsmith
      @PeterSmithwoodsmith 8 месяцев назад

      Hello and thank you for your comment. Actually, these tools are not expensive at all. The most expensive machine I have is the panel saw but it is the cheapest panel saw you can buy on the market and with the amount of features it has it is very cheap. The Lathe, grinder, drill press, fret saw and many of the power tools are over 30 years old and are all very cheap brands like Drapper and Titan. If you show this video to any Joiner or carpenter or cabinet maker they will confirm this. I run my workshop on a very small budget. Some of the machines I built myself, like the Bandsaw and table saw. All the machines and tools in total, cost less than a good quality table saw or the like.

    I like these! I make my own version patterned after the Persian setar (with a flat back, I’m not up to making the traditional staved bowls… and I use metal frets, not tied) and call it the Dulsetar 😆 8:37 … this reminds me, I need to change the blade on my bandsaw!

    Damn! Spent way too much time with each segment of the building process. I believe at least 90% of the folks watching these types videos on woodworking don't need to see the entirety of each process over and over and over. I estimate most people "get it" in as little as 30 seconds to a minute of each part of constructing. People get tired of watching something being constructed after 10 to 15 minutes or so. At least I do. I'm not meaning to be curt just helpful and I hope it's taken that way. If I'm wrong then I apologize and will remove my comment.

      @@PeterSmithwoodsmith ....Peter you are absolutely right, making a video is not easy, I tried and failed miserably about three times when I realized I didn't have the tools upstairs to get it right. I had no idea you had just gotten started when making this video and I never think of looking at the date of when they were made. I'm old now and am getting more cranky by the year, I've been around going on 75 and have worked very hard since I was a seven year old boy. Sorry, I had wrote a book but erased it cause I'm bad about running on. Please except my apology if I upset you. I was going to erase my comment but decided since you were so gracious I'm leaving it up so people can see what a fine person you are in the face of someone that should keep their mouth shut, my dad raised me that way and I carried the marks for along time growing up to prove it. I should have known better, again, sorry.

    you should try to replace your black paint with vanderblack and see if that improves it. or makes it worse

    • @PeterSmithwoodsmith
      @PeterSmithwoodsmith 11 месяцев назад

      Hello and thank you for the comment. I have experimented with various matt black paints, black velvets, and black flockings I really couldn't notice the difference. it is certainly important that the inside of the telescope is matt black of some kind. My opinion is that wherever possible black flocking is adequate. Black heat shrink is fine for poles and matt black paint for everywhere else. Nothing should be left metallic or bright. the only time I find I get light reflection issues is if I'm observing the sun with a white light filter on the front of the telescope and there is light getting in the optical tube from a gap somewhere that bounces off the white light filter on to the mirror and into the eyepiece. Which is easily solved.
